Star Trek Online has had a “Q’s Winter Wonderland” event over the holidays. It’s kind of fun… I won (in-game) Federation scarves for most of my characters (still time for more, as it goes until January the 9th). It has some bugs, though, as I can’t do any of the races which give you the collectibles used to claim prizes with my Klingon character (they ALWAYS screw up my Klingon, and then they wonder why so few players use them… twits).
But, I digress.
I’ve had 3 geek-out nerdgasm moments in there.
The first was realizing that the music in the background was the same music as when Picard was inside the Nexus with his imaginary wife and children in Star Trek: Generations.
The second was a vendor who only appeared until Christmas who gave away a couple of very rare (‘Purple’) energy-based melee weapons (a Klingon bat’leth and a Vulcan lirpa) who was a Ferengi but looked - and talked - an awful lot like Yoda (if I’d known he was going to disappear after Christmas I’d have screencapped him myself before he vanished).
The final one was today when both of my kids recognized what the Winter Wonderland music was from, and I knew that I’d never be alone with my love of Star Trek in this family.
By the way, it goes Free-To-Play on January 17th.
Or, for you other Trek fans out there… 17-01.
